Confidently Facing Perimenopause: Embracing Change with Self-Assurance

Perimenopause is a natural and inevitable part of every woman’s life.

This transitional period can last for several years, leading up to menopause. During this time, the body undergoes a series of changes that can be physically and emotionally challenging.

If you’re anything like me, it’s a rollercoaster that I wasn’t prepared for, didn’t get educated on and am now only just realising the depth this transitional period goes to.

The physical symptoms of perimenopause can include hot flushes, night sweats, joint pain, brain fog, the feeling of ‘can’t be arsed’ – the CBAs, irregular periods and sleep disturbances to name just a few. The Balance App from Dr Louise Newson is a great resource where you can log and track your own blend of symptoms. I highly recommend doing this so you have evidence to speak from with health professionals.

The emotional symptoms can include mood swings, anxiety, depression, and irritability. All of these changes can take a toll on your confidence, leaving you feeling uncertain and overwhelmed. What I’m most interesting in is how we cope, manage and reinvent ourselves as we navigate the messy midlife. When we take control and accept this stage as inevitable we can begin the process of a happy thriving midlife.

It’s easy to be reminded that perimenopause is a natural part of the aging process, yet when you feel like your life is out of control and changing without your permission, that can lead to us unravelling.

What I do believe firmly is that with the right mindset, you can confidently navigate this transitional period. I’m passionate about helping women to regain confidence, prioritise well-being and thrive moving forwards in midlife. It’s my mission to empower you so you can enjoy your journey.

Here are some tips to help you embrace change with self-assurance during perimenopause.

  1. Educate Yourself

Knowledge is power, and understanding the physical and emotional changes that occur during perimenopause can help you feel more in control of your body. It is essential to learn about the different symptoms of perimenopause, how they manifest, and how they can be managed. Check out the Balance app and Dr Louise Newson’s resources.

  1. Practice Self-Care

Taking care of your body and mind can help you feel more confident during perimenopause. Exercise, healthy nutrition, and stress-reducing activities like yoga and meditation can help ease physical symptoms and improve emotional wellbeing. Self-care is unique and personal to each of us so find what works for you. I have found that pausing as I’m rushing around the house, just sitting on the stairs in the midst of what I was doing and taking 30 seconds to breathe deeply can help reduce the build of anxiety. In the words of Adrienne (yoga master), Find What Feels Good – for you.

  1. Seek Support

Talking to other women going through perimenopause can provide valuable emotional support and help you feel less alone. Additionally, healthcare providers can offer guidance and support for managing symptoms. Ensure you speak to the menopause expert at your doctors surgery – in my case that was the senior practice nurse. Ask other women in your area, you’ll likely find that there’s a group or person who’s the one to contact. If you’re exploring HRT options do your research so you know what the terminology is around hormones and their functions.

You don’t have to go through this period alone. It can leave you feeling uncertain about your life choices, what your future holds and sometimes just wondering how you are going to get through the next 24hrs. If you’re feeling a little lost and would like to feel the full support of someone who understands, yet can provide you with a confidential space with full focus on you, perhaps 1-2-1 coaching is an option you would like to explore. 1. Embrace Change

Perimenopause is a time of change, and embracing this change can help you feel more confident and in control. You can take this opportunity to explore new interests and hobbies, set new goals, and prioritize self-care. Taking control and accepting the change does go a long way to reduce the anxiety.

When you know better you do better.

In conclusion, perimenopause is a transitional period that can be physically and emotionally challenging, but with the right mindset, you can confidently navigate this time of change. By educating yourself, practicing self-care, seeking support, and embracing change, you can embrace perimenopause with self-assurance and come out stronger on the other side.
